Die From Laughing, Not From Cancer

Today was a very special day at NVC! In the morning, we were visited by Yvette Martinez, an advisor to Barbara Boxer. She took time to meet our students and learn about our school.

In the afternoon, Ms. Haze’s sister (& breast cancer survivor), Elysia Skye, spoke with students about making healthy choices. Elysia shared her personal story as well as gave advice on how to add joy and reduce stress in our lives! It was a really great assembly, and we want to thank Mrs. Rodriguez and her students for hosting it!

Breast Cancer Prevention Day is Wednesday, 10/19

Most people talk about Breast Health and Breast Cancer Awareness, but what we really need to talk about is Breast Cancer Prevention!

On Wednesday, speaker Elysia Skye will be at NVC to share her story and talk about how to prevent health problems and cancer in your life! Please wear pink to support Breast Health and come see Elysia speak during our assembly at 2pm!

============================

Taken from www.elysiaskye.org

Elysia Skye was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer her right breast & auxillary lymphnodes shortly after her 24th birthday. She underwent a double mastectomy, 18 weeks of intravenous chemotherapy, 5 1/2 weeks of radiation and reconstructive surgeries (expanders, silicone implants, skin grafted nipples and two fat graftings). No fun? THINK AGAIN!

As her hair fell out, she had an awesome mohawk for a few days! And despite not being able to work full time, she was constantly surrounded by her amazing friends and family and laughing more than she ever had, which is a better cure for cancer than any oncologist could recommend!

Elysia documented her experience through her novel, “I Got My Tits Done In Beverly HIlls.” She also made a 15 minute short film called “Lose Weight With Cancer” to encourage laughter during trauma and teach other young people about the effects of stress and cancer.

“With a sense of humor and a change in your perception, you will lessen the severity of any illness or trauma.” – Elysia Skye

Thank you so much for your help and remember,
DIE FROM LAUGHING, NOT FROM CANCER!
