New Village Charter High School’s mission is to prepare young women to become successful, well-informed, capable adults. New Village serves young women who wish to enroll in a small, safe, free, college preparatory high school. New Village provides a high quality environment for all students. We have an engaging, rigorous curriculum with individualized assistance for students enrolled in accelerated or remedial classes.

Goals

Students will be prepared to either apply to a four or two year college; or enroll in a vocational training institute; or to enter directly into the world of work.

Unique Educational Program

New Village’s unique education program enables students heal-bay.jpgwithin a girls-only setting to demonstrate academic achievement, emotional well-being, and social responsibility. By providing a rigorous curriculum with an Individualized Learning Plan for each young woman, New Village implements a personalized education based on need, strengths, interest, and future goals. This educational program allows mastery of necessary grade level California Standards. In addition, the staff and teachers of New Village create a supportive and nurturing environment for personal and emotional growth. Both individual counseling services and small group problem solving groups assist young women in addressing personal and human development challenges. Through reflection in Advisory, weekly Group Discussion, journal writing and expression in drama, art, music and dance, girls have the opportunity to foster a positive emotional well-being. Finally, New Village offers students the opportunity to participate in community service in near-by agencies. Young women learn social responsibility by sharing, giving and volunteering in local health, senior citizen, and early education agencies.

History

New Village is a new school that opened in September 2006 in a newly renovated and equipped facility near Rampart and Beverly Boulevards in Los Angeles. New Village opened in 2006 with grades 9 and 10. In September 2007, 11th grade will also be offered. Beginning in 2008, New Village will offer all four high school grades, 9, 10, 11, and 12. The high school will continue to be small and personalized for each student. An enrollment of 120 students is planned in school year 2007-08. Classroom size will not exceed 15 students per teacher. Both tutoring and computer assisted instruction in reading and basic math provide individual student assistance.

Significantly, New Village High School is the first charter high school in California to receive permission from the State of California to operate a girls-only school. Within this setting, young women have an opportunity to openly discuss their life issues, concerns, and challenges.
